Cliffside Integration & Architectural Concept
Perched directly on a sheer cliff face just north of Mykonos Town (Chora), Cavo Tagoo represents a fusion of Cycladic whitewash and raw cliff excavation. Founded by architect Paris Liakos, the hotel was built using granite stone quarried on site during initial terrace excavation, ensuring the resort visually roots itself into the natural topography.
Unlike the quiet monastic tone of cliffside Santorini retreats, Cavo Tagoo is planned as a social amphitheatre. The architecture directs guest movement toward the central communal deck, where the grand infinity pool forms both an aquatic horizon and a lively social focal point.
The 38-Metre Saltwater Basin & Floating Loungers
The hotel's primary pool is a 38-metre saltwater installation engineered directly over the rocky coastline. One of its signature design elements is the series of custom floating sunbeds—heavy timber daybeds mounted on submerged pedestals that give the visual illusion of floating freely upon the water's surface.
Behind the pool deck, the lounge features an integrated 40-metre aquarium bar, illuminated by soft LED systems that reflect across the water after dark. The water system utilizes treated Aegean seawater, filtered and circulated across a flush perimeter weir that spills invisibly toward the rocky shore below.
Sunset Horizon and Ambient Atmosphere
Cavo Tagoo is situated with direct western exposure. As afternoon turns to evening, the sun sinks into the Aegean right in line with the pool’s vanishing line, with the sacred island of Delos visible on the distant horizon. In the evening, the pool deck transforms into an upbeat lounge environment with resident DJs and an active cocktail and dining program at the on-site Zuma restaurant.
Architectural Strengths
- Expansive 38-metre saltwater basin with innovative submerged daybeds.
- Direct western orientation yielding clear sunset views over Delos.
- Seamless blend of raw quarry granite and smooth Cycladic lime plaster.
- Close proximity to Chora (approximately a 15-minute walk or brief transfer).
Considerations & Trade-offs
- High social energy and upbeat music that may not suit travelers seeking quiet seclusion.
- Access road carries vehicular port traffic during peak ferry arrival periods.
- Floating sunbeds are heavily contested during peak sunset hours.
- Saltwater system requires regular maintenance due to maritime winds.
Comparison with Southern Mykonian Beach Resorts
While southern Mykonian properties (such as those around Psarou or Ornos) offer calm beach coves, Cavo Tagoo trades direct sand access for dramatic clifftop elevation and dramatic sunset vantage points. It remains an option best suited to those who prize design-forward evening energy and expansive ocean horizons over private beachfront swimming.
